Mechanized farming

South Georgia produces more than 80 percent of the state's row crops, including peanuts, cotton and tobacco. Coastal plain communities count on UGA research, extension and instruction programs that support a healthy, farm-based economy. UGA scientists have led the introduction of:

  • mechanized farming (1940s),
  • irrigation (1950s) and
  • precision agriculture (1990s),
which uses computers, satellites and global positioning systems
to minimize inputs and maximize yields.
